Nasal Snuff: FAQs

What is nasal snuff?

Snuff is a form of finely ground smokeless tobacco predominantly enjoyed by the English aristocracy of the 18th century. It is an arguably healthier alternative to smoking for the user, and undeniably healthier for those in your company as you are not subjecting them to second-hand smoke while snuffing.

How do you use nasal snuff?

There are more than a few widely accepted methods of taking snuff. One of the most common is to simply take a pinch of snuff between your thumb and forefinger and sniff it sharply into one of your nostrils, and then into the other. Some snuff takers like to roll the snuff around for a few seconds pinched between the thumb and forfinger to help warm and release the aromatic oils in the snuff for a more flavorful experience. It is important to remember that the snuff should only be SNIFFED into the nose, not snorted. The snuff needs to remain in front of your nose, it is not intended to go into your sinuses or throat.

1. Other methods include tapping some snuff onto the back of your hand, onto the depression formed above the wrist near the base of your thumb when one stretches the thumb, or in the slight depression between your thumb and forefinger.

2. Some snuff-takers prefer to use a "bullet," a dispenser that can be held directly to the nostrils. This device eliminates the need to carry around a tin and the potential mess of dipping your fingers into it.

3. Experiment and see what is the most comfortable way to take it for you.

How is snuff made?

It is made from carefully selected blends of choice tobaccos, often originating from Africa where the leaf is particularly suited. Mature & Dry After a number of maturing processes the leaf is dried.

In the old days this was done using the power of the water wheel at Sharrow Mills, in oak mortars by iron pestles. Today, modern machinery is used to ensure consistent high quality standards are met.

Several stages of sieving follow to ensure the silky, even texture.

The recipes known only to two members of the Wilson family in each generation since 1737, natural oils such as Bergamotte, Attar of Roses, Jasmin and Sandalwood are added in precise measure to delight the nose.

The blended snuff is matured in wood to ensure permeation of the flavour and to allow the full development of the flavour and character.

The snuff is packaged into tins and is shipped to tobacconists, wholesalers and to individuals around the globe to enjoy.

Any tips on using nasal snuff?

Do not resist the urge to sneeze. It will most likely happen, but resisting it will only decrease the enjoyment you obtain from using snuff. The urge to sneeze when using snuff will pass the more you use it.

Take care in how you sniff. The effects of accidentally snorting the snuff into your sinuses or throat can be very unsettling, and snuff should never have to be uncomfortable. Do not be discouraged if you don't get it right the first time - with practice, the sharp but shallow sniff needed to get the snuff into the front of your nose but no further becomes second nature.

Keep in mind that the use of nasal snuff is often accompanied by increased nasal discharge. It is a good idea to have a handkerchief or tissue close to hand to take care of this increased discharge.

Are there different kinds of snuff?

Dry snuff, or European snuff is usually scented or flavored and is intended to be sniffed through the nose. Typical flavors are floral, mentholated (also called 'medicated'), fruit, and spice, either pure or in blends. Other common flavors include:

  • Spearmint
  • Cinnamon
  • Rose
  • Camphor

Modern Flavors

  • Cola
  • Whisky
  • Bourbon
  • Cherry

Apart from flavors, dry snuff also comes in a range of texture and moistness, from very fine to coarse, and from toast (very dry) to very moist. Often drier snuffs are ground finer.
Scotch snuff is made of the strongest sort of tobacco, and is put up in bladders and bottles, without being scented.
Rapee and maccouba are put up in jars and bottles; and the former is generally scented with bergamont, and the latter with teh ottar of roses.

What are the health risks?

Snuff is still a form of tobacco and therefore contains nicotine and is thus addictive. And while it is generally accepted as less harmful than smoking (and obviously less harmful to those around you than smoking) there are still carcinogenic (cancer) risks (citation needed!!). Snuff is healthier than smoking, but it is by no means a risk-free alternative and not something you should do if you intend to live forever.

There is no known scientific literature linking entorrhinal cancer (cancer of the nasal cavity) to the use of nasal snuff. It is by far the safest form of tobacco use. However, the cardiovascular risks associated with nicotine use remain. So as with all tobacco products, use at your own discretion.

How long does a container of snuff last?

That really depends on your consumption. Containers come in weights of 5 grams up to jars of half a kilo at a time.

Let us say you are using a 10 gram tin of snuff with a moderate to average user, the container should 3-5 days.

If you are heavy snuffer you may go through twice as much as a moderate user.

The cost is about 30-50 cents per gram. That's maybe a dollar a day.

Keep in mind that snuffs have different strengths. The stronger the snuff the fewer sniffs you will need to take to maintain an adequate nicotine level in your body.

Can I use snuff anywhere?

There is no reason that you can't use snuff where ever you want. There is no second-hand smoke with snuff. There is no odour, except in your nose, with snuff. The worst that will happen is that you sneeze or need to use a handkerchief

Still, do not be surprised if people ask about you what you just put up your nose. After all, to the casual observer, using snuff may creates the appearance of something entirely different. Customers report that simply explaining to others how snuff work usually creates easy acceptance for using the product.

Is snuff a smoking cessation product?

With cigarette smoking declining in the modern world, the tobacco industry has to look for other products that can keep the old customers and attract new ones. Different forms of smokeless tobacco are currently massively promoted and are gaining in importance. Dry nasal snuff – the oldest known form of tobacco in Europe – is one of them. The health risks associated with it are different to those attributed to smoking and oral wet snuff.

The nicotine contained leads to dependency. Its resorption rate is similar to that of smoking, so it could be seen as an adequate substitutional therapy. The risk for cardiovascular diseases is lower, compared to that for smokers. Chronic abuse leads to morphological and functional changes in the nasal mucosa. Although it contains substances that are potentially carcinogenic, at present, there is no firm evidence, relating the use of nasal snuff to a higher incidence of head and neck or other malignancies.
